What aluminum-wrapped columns are (and aren't)

Aluminum column wraps are a finished aluminum skin that goes around an existing structural post — usually wood (4×4, 6×6, 8×8) or sometimes a concrete-filled steel pipe. The wrap doesn't carry the load; the wood or steel inside it does. We're finishing the column, not replacing it.

When wrapping makes sense

  • Porch columns are wood and weathered — paint is peeling, base is rotting
  • You're replacing the railings anyway and want a matched aesthetic
  • Concrete columns look industrial and you want them to read residential
  • Heritage / Victorian look — square or fluted aluminum wrap with caps and bases

When wrapping doesn't make sense

  • The wood column is structurally compromised — we need to replace, not skin (we sub the post replacement out)
  • You want round columns at large diameters (we do 4"–8" round; bigger goes to a millwork shop)
  • Tapered classical columns — those are FRP or wood, not aluminum

How a column wrap install runs

  1. Templating: we measure each column on site (plumb, height, base detail). Off-the-shelf 8' wraps don't fit a 7'9¾" column — we cut to your actual height.
  2. Surface prep: wood columns get scraped of any peeling paint, anything loose comes off. We don't cover up rotted wood — if the column needs replacement, we flag it before fabrication.
  3. Wrap install: two halves slide around the column, lock together with hidden mechanical fasteners. No exposed seams on the front face.
  4. Cap and base: separate pieces fit at top and bottom with caulked transitions. The cap protects the top of the wood from water; the base hides the floor connection.

Total install time: about 30 minutes per column once on site. Most porches have 2–4 columns and are wrapped in a single morning while the railings are being installed.

Common questions about column wraps

Will the wrap trap moisture against the wood column inside?

The cap and base have weep details that let any incidental water out. The wood inside doesn't see direct rain or snow once wrapped — it sees less moisture than it did unwrapped. The failure mode for wrapped columns is when the wood was already rotted at install (we wouldn't wrap it) or when ground-level water wicks up through a missing base. Both are install-quality issues, not wrap design.

Can I wrap just one column to test the look?

Yes — single-column installs are common for testing. Pricing: $420 includes site templating + one trip. If you proceed with the rest after, the per-column price drops because we're already there.

What's the largest column you can wrap?

12' height, 10" square or 10" round are the practical limits before we move to a custom millwork process. Above those sizes, the wraps get heavy and the structural detailing changes — usually means a custom shop quote rather than calculator pricing.
